Elul 5763 - Tishray 5764 Specials & News
August 29 - October 26, 2003

Last month we celebrated our 8th Anniversary by moving our studio to a new and exciting location. Artisan Works (“where art lives”) is a huge factory building converted into a 40,000 square-foot gallery of seemingly endless corridors and cozy galleries displaying the works of world-class artists and craftspeople. Many artist studios are scattered among the breathtaking paintings, photographs, mobiles and sculptures. As of last month, we are the fortunate new tenants of one of these beautiful studios. The New York Times wrote that Artisan Works is one of the best reasons to visit Rochester. We strongly agree! So please come visit us for an experience you’ll never forget. Learn more about Artisan Works at http://www.artisanworks.net.

CAJE in 1-2-3
In between painting the walls, rewiring electricity and mounting shelves, we went to Columbus, OH to join the CAJE conference. Here are three highlights:

CAJE 1. Fabric Marker Raffle Winner
About 100 people entered our Marvy Marker Raffle to win the Fabric Marker Collection (144 broad-point Marvy fabric markers in display cases, value $374). We’re pleased to announce that this raffle’s winner is Roland Roth, Director of Education at Congregation Beth Shalom in Seattle, WA.
Roland, who is also a friend of mine, begged me to “pull strings” and make sure he’d be the winner. I didn’t. His entry, however, was selected despite that. Maybe it’s because of the Stars of David he decorated his entry with...
To claim your prize, Roland, you must e-mail or call us ASAP.
Roland is joining previous winners:
Julie Auerbach of The Gross Schechter Day School in Pepper Pike, OH
Orna Sonnenschein of Temple Beth Am in Framingham MA
Eda Klein of Ohev Shalom of Bucks County in Richboro PA
Ilana Davidov of Beth El Synagogue in New Rochelle, NY
Rabbi Cy Stanway of Temple Beth Miriam in Elberon, NJ
Jessica Bucholtz of Shomrei Torah Synagogue in West Hills CA.

CAJE 2. Sometime the simplest ideas are the most brilliant
This year at CAJE I met Ruti Worrall, a beautiful music teacher and writer from Manchester England, who developed a program that is so great, it made me want to go back to teach. Shironi is a songbook of 75 traditional and modern Hebrew songs with both the actual notated music and guitar chords for each song as well as the lyrics in Hebrew, English and transliteration.
What makes this program so brilliant are the two accompanying CDs. The first contains all of the songs performed by Israeli singers to help you pronounce the words correctly and learn the tunes. The second contains just the instrumentals so that you can have your very own Hebrew karaoke. I imagine classroom song contests with students singing solos or forming bands. I imagine school-wide karaoke Sundays and sing-along.
I always knew that music and art are the best teaching tools, but as someone who can’t carry a tune, I concentrated on art. Having such a resource makes teaching through music so easy that I think this one is a must-have for every Hebrew classroom.
As with all my recommendations, I get absolutely no monetary compensation from making this recommendation, only the joy that I’ve introduced you to an incredible program that will improve your teaching. To order this program in the USA, contact Judy Ginsberg at judy@jewishentertainment.net. To order this program in Europe, contact Ruti Worrall at rutiworrall@shironi.co.uk.

CAJE 3. Nachat*
A young woman came to the Siddur Cover Workshop I presented at CAJE. She smiled at me as if she knew me. Since I didn’t recognize her, I asked for her name. Turns out the last time I saw Elissa Klein was eight years ago, when she was a child in my Judaic art class at Temple B’rith Kodesh in Rochester, NY. I swelled with pride when she told me she became a Judaic teacher in Vermont. After the workshop I read in her evaluation, which brought tears to my eyes: “I grew up with Yorron’s art projects and they just might be the only positive experience I remember from religious School. Years later, my friends and I still talk about getting married under the chupah we made in 4th grade”.
* Nachat: (Also “Nachas” in Yiddish) Means joy, pride, and delight. Usually one gets plenty of it from grandchildren. As teachers, we are lucky to receive such a feeling from our students as well.

Over 6,000 Sold: Mezuzah Case prices reduced!
Two years ago, we introduced the Mezuzah Case. To launch it, we had to invest a great deal of money to manufacture an aluminum mold. To recover the cost of this initial investment, we priced the first 3,000 Mezuzah Cases at $12 per kit and the following 3,000 cases at $10 per kit. We’ve been fortunate enough to sell 6,000 cases to date and are thankful to all of you who made it part of your curriculum and one of our most popular projects.
Now that the initial investment has been paid off, we are happy to pass along additional savings to you with newly reduced pricing for this extraordinary kit:
